Grady powers Blaze past first-place Rattlers

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Quarterback Tommy Grady threw for seven touchdowns and ran for another Friday night as the Utah Blaze took out the Arizona Rattlers 62-49 at the US Airways Center.

Grady completed 20-of-33 passes for 184 yards, tossing four of his seven touchdowns to Tysson Poots, Utah’s leading receiver on the night.

Poots had nine receptions for 63 yards and teammate Aaron Lesue had five catches for 51 yards and a TD.

Arizona (12-4) went into the game leading the West Division, but Utah (11-5) had revenge on its mind. The Rattlers handed the Blaze an 86-70 loss in Week 11.

Arizona scored first on Oddie Armstrong’s 3-yard run at the 12:22 mark of the first quarter but Grady brought the Blaze back, scoring himself on a rushing TD at the 6:55 mark.

The two teams traded scores until Lesue scored on a 17-yard pass from Grady with 2:44 left before halftime, putting Utah ahead 34-21. Utah went up 48-28 when Poots and Grady hooked up on a 3-yard score early in the third quarter.

Arizona quarterback Nick Davila threw for 316 yards, four TDs and two interceptions.

Armstrong rushed for a pair of scores.

Utah’s Will Mulder led the defense with six tackles and an interception. David Hyland added four tackles and a pick.

In their last contest, the Blaze overwhelmed the Georgia Force en route to a 61-38 victory during Week 16.

The high-powered Blaze offense was plagued by mistakes the last time they faced the Rattlers, but still managed to put 70 points on the board despite five turnovers. Since that point, Grady has thrown 45 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.
