Man claims self-defense in Box Elder shooting

PARK VALLEY — Authorities are reviewing whether to file charges in a shooting that left an Ogden man hospitalized.

Box Elder County Chief Deputy Kevin Potter says 61-year-old Kevin Angus told detectives he shot the victim in self-defense Thursday night when an argument escalated at his home in northwest Utah.

Forty-one-year-old Frank Richins was transported by medical helicopter to University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Potter says Richins remains hospitalized but had no update on his condition Friday.

Potter says the shooting occurred at Angus’ home in Dove Creek Estates, about 20 miles west of Park Valley. He says Angus made the initial 911 call and claims the victim pulled a gun first.

The case has been turned over to the Box Elder County Attorney’s Office for review.
