2 killed in Provo Canyon motorcycle crash

PROVO — Authorities are investigating whether wind gusts and speed played a role in the deaths of a young man and woman riding a motorcycle in Provo Canyon over the weekend.

Utah Highway Patrol officials say 23-year-old David C. Cancilla of Orem and 18-year-old Janet Velasco of Orem were killed in the crash about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities say the motorcycle was going downhill in a construction zone on State Route 189 when it left the right side of the road and hit a cable barrier and posts.

Cancilla and Velasco were thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

Friends tell the Deseret News Cancilla was working in Minnesota for the summer and had returned to Utah to attend his sister’s wedding reception the night before the crash.
