WEST VALLEY CITY— West Valley police have arrested a man and rescued the 13-year-old niece they believe he’d been having sex with and planned to take to Mexico.

Officials say the girl’s parents reported her missing about 9 p.m. Thursday.

Police say they confirmed her 42-year-old uncle, Luis Gomez Velasco, had been planning to take the girl south of the border. They also say he’d been having a sexual relationship with the girl for the past two years.

Authorities say they found Velasco in West Valley City and booked him in the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of child kidnapping, child rape and aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

The girl was returned to her parents.
