OGDEN — A 61-year-old woman died and her teenage grandson was injured in a rollover accident Saturday afternoon.
The crash closed traffic on a section of State Road 39, the road through Ogden Canyon, for several hours as responders and investigators dealt with the aftermath.
The woman was driving a silver GMC Envoy west out of Ogden Canyon when, for some reason, she went off the north side of the road about 4:30 p.m., said Ogden Police Lt. Willard Cragun.
She got the vehicle back onto Canyon Road but then lost control and the SUV rolled, winding up on its side just west of the intersection with Valley Drive.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but she was found dead on arrival, Cragun said.
Police are waiting to release the identity of the woman until they’ve been able to notify her family.
Her 17-year-old grandson, a passenger in the Envoy, also was injured.
He was taken by ambulance to Ogden Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Cragun was not able to provide details on the teen’s injuries or condition.
Police shut down traffic in both directions from just west of Valley Drive to Harrison Boulevard so they could investigate and clear the scene.
The closure was expected to last until late Saturday.
Commuters who wanted to get into and out of the canyon could still take Valley Drive.
Police are still investigating exactly why the vehicle went off the road.
