Charges dismissed against Cuara

FARMINGTON — Prosecutors dismissed charges against a 21-year-old Layton man who had been accused of being involved in a Clearfield shooting in January.

John Alexander Cuara had a preliminary hearing set for Monday. He was charged with second-degree felony obstructing justice. Police said he was the driver of a car that was at an apartment complex on Jan. 6 when Darrell Morris, 35, was shot three times. Police say Daniel Alonso Garcia, 18, of Clearfield, was the shooter and the incident was gang-related.

Police said Morris told them he is a former member of the Northside Hoovers of Arkansas.

Garcia and the others charged in the shooting are members of the East Side Longos gang, police said.

Garcia pleaded guilty in June to a second-degree felony discharge of a firearm in the direction of a person, second-degree felony aggravated assault with serious bodily injury and third-degree felony riot with a weapon. A sentencing hearing is set for July 30.
