State offers workshops after health data breach

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health is launching a series of 12 workshops statewide to provide one-on-one help to hundreds of thousands who had their personal information compromised.

The first workshop is set for Thursday at the Salt Lake County Government Center. The tour will make 12 stops at communities across Utah and conclude Aug. 22 in St. George.

Utah Data Security Ombudsman Sheila Walsh-McDonald and her staff will be at every workshop to provide individual case management.

State officials announced in May that hackers broke into a government server and stole the personal information of about 780,000 people, including the Social Security numbers of about 280,000.

Utah’s chief technology officer resigned in the wake of the theft.

The workshops will offer residents information on how to protect themselves.
