FARMINGTON -- Attorneys hope they can dismiss attempted murder charges against Thomas Lorin Gunn, who they say is mentally incompetent.

A hearing for the 64-year-old man was held Thursday in 2nd District Court. Gunn was not transported from the Utah State Hospital for the competency review hearing and felony arraignment hearing. He is charged with first-degree felony disarming a police officer and second-degree felony attempted murder. He is accused of stabbing his sister-in-law, Marva Gunn, 23 times on June 16, 2009, in Sunset.

Another hearing is set for Sept. 20.

Gunn was found incompetent to stand trail in July 2009 and was transported to the state hospital for care.

Deputy Davis County Attorney Steve Major said he hopes the hospital will commit Gunn civilly so his office can dismiss the charges.
