Hiker rescued near Malan’s Peak

OGDEN — A man in his early 50s had to be hoisted off the mountain near Malan’s Peak by helicopter Sunday night.

Ogden Battalion Chief Corey Barton said the man and his wife had taken the gondola up Snowbasin and had intended to hike down the mountain.

But the man injured his leg in bad terrain in Taylor Canyon, Barton said.

Emergency workers made a three-and-a-half-hour effort to get to the man and hook him to the helicopter.

Then they hiked down the mountain with his wife in rain and lightning.

Barton said the lightning caused a grass fire while they were on the mountain, but the rain put it out.

The man was to be taken by private vehicle to the doctor, Barton said.
