AMERICAN FORK -- A Utah man suffered a broken leg and other injuries when a sewer line trench collapsed, burying him above the waist.

The Daily Herald reports the 29-year-old man and others were preparing to install a sewer line for expansion of The Meadows shopping center in American Fork when the accident happened Friday morning.

Rescuers say the injured man suffered an obviously broken femur and possible internal injuries. He was conscious during the rescue but in severe pain.

Work on the project has been shut down pending an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Crews had to make sure the 15-foot deep trench was stable before attempting the rescue, but they were able to get the man out about 30 minutes after receiving the call.
