BRIGHAM CITY — The state Medical Examiner’s Office has positively identified the body of a woman found Friday night in a ravine near Dock Flats Campground as that of missing 31-year-old Jenny Atkinson, of Brigham City.
Atkinson was identified Monday through several unique tattoos on her body, said Box Elder County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Kevin Potter.
The cause of Atkinson’s death is unknown and remains under investigation, Potter said.
“There are lots of leads we are chasing down,” he said.
Toxicology tests will be performed in conjunction with an autopsy on Atkinson’s remains and it could be several weeks before results are released, Potter said.
Atkinson’s body was discovered Friday night by several children camping at the Dock Flats Campground, said Potter. The body was found about 300 yards from her Toyota Scion.
Atkinson appears to have been at the campground for several weeks, Potter said.
She had been missing since July 17, when she dropped her 12-year-old son off at a friend’s house and never returned, her father, Art Atkinson, has said.
Art Atkinson has also said he is puzzled as to why his daughter would go to the Dock Flats Campground. There are several deep ruts in the road leading to the campground and Atkinson, who had cerebral palsy, probably would not have gone there because her car is low too the ground, Art Atkinson said.
An obituary for Jenny Atkinson is on page 7A of today’s Standard-Examiner.
