Man detained after firing rifle near Mirror lake trailhead

COALVILLE — Authorities say an 18-year-old man has been taken into custody after shooting a rifle near a crowded trailhead.

Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. John Lange tells KSLthe man was being questioned but hadn’t yet been arrested.

Lange says hikers in the area called authorities Tuesday morning after the man was seen with the rifle around the trailhead of Bald Mountain, along the Mirror Lake Highway.

Lange says the man fired some shots into the woods, but didn’t hit anyone.

He then retreated to a hill, and authorities called in a SWAT team.

Lange says that authorities eventually convinced the man to put down the rifle. He was then taken in custody for questioning.
