SALT LAKE CITY— Firefighters are investigating the cause of an underground explosion that blew off two manhole covers in downtown Salt Lake City on Monday afternoon.
The Salt Lake City fire department says a hazardous materials crew suspects a fire might be burning at an underground power vault at the intersection of 300 South and 200 East.
Fire officials say no one was injured, but about 40 homes and businesses in the area lost power.
Witnesses also reported seeing yellow smoke coming out of the manholes following the explosion.
Officials have closed the intersection while a hazmat crew investigates. A nearby furniture store and bar were also evacuated.
