OGDEN -- Outfielder Jeremy Rathjen was announced as the Ogden's only Pioneer League All-Star on Saturday, but the Raptors have been playing like a team of all-stars for the past two weeks.
Jose Capellan doubled twice and drove in three runs, while Rathjen, Noel Cuevas and Tae-Hyeok Nam each drove in two RBIs as Ogden won for the ninth time in 12 games Saturday at Lindquist Field, defeating Billings 11-8.
Rathjen, an 11th-round pick this year out of Rice University, lined a two-run single to center field in a four-run second inning as the Raptors took command of Saturday's game. The right fielder entered Saturday's game first in the league in runs scored (57), second in on-base percentage (.447), third in walks (40) and sixth in batting average (.330).
Teammates Carlos Frias, Kazuki Nishijima, Eric Smith, Corey Seager and manager Damon Berryhill all received Pioneer League All-Star team honorable mention.
Rathjen said Berryhill announced the honors in a team meeting prior to the game.
"We're pretty excited," Rathjen said. "It's an honor to be part of it (but) we've still got to go out and win some games.
"We thought we had (some more) guys that deserved to be part of that team, but we'll keep that in the back of our minds and hopefully keep playing well."
Ogden won the Pioneer League South first-half title and appears to have left its early August slump in the dust.
"You always want to play the best baseball you can," Rathjen said. "It's a long season, we struggled a little bit at the beginning of August, but it's all about who wins the last game, right? We've just got to keep playing well and keep some momentum going into the playoffs."
Former Boise State football recruit Malcolm Holland stole three bases in four attempts Saturday to take sole possession of second place on the Raptors single-season list. Holland, who went 2-for-3 with two walks and scored three times, has a league-best 33 steals and trails only Frank Candela, who stole 43 bases for the Raptors in 1998.
L.A. Dodgers first-round pick Seager left the game with a hamstring cramp in the third inning after hitting a single and advancing to second on a walk.
The Raptors' play was not as crisp as Friday's 14-4 win, but they got the job done. Third baseman Bladimir Franco committed two errors, but he snared a line drive that briefly popped up out of his glove before he held on for the final out after Billings scored twice in the top of the ninth.
"Defensively, we didn't play well at all tonight," Berryhill said. "Offensively, we swung the bats well, ran the bases well. (Gregg) Downing gave us a solid five ... I know some of (his runs) were earned, but I don't think he should have given up any runs. Those were plays we should have made behind him."
Downing (2-0) went five innings and scattered eight hits and four runs, three earned, for the win. Billings starter Sal Romano gave up seven hits and six runs, five earned, over 41/3 innings. Romano (5-5) struggled with his control, walking six while taking the loss.
Daniel Pigott and Jon Matthews led off the second and eighth innings, respectively, with solo homers for Billings, but the Mustangs couldn't muster enough to overtake Ogden.
An error by Franco gave Billings a bases-loaded opportunity in the fifth, but Downing coaxed Brandon Dailey into a harmless fly ball to center to escape.
The Raptors have a chance to complete a three-game series sweep against the Mustangs this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Lindquist Field.
* RAPTORS NOTES: Dogders outfielder Andre Ethier, brother of Ogden Raptor Devon Ethier, set a Los Angeles record Saturday with his 10th consecutive hit while tying a 93-year-old Dodgers franchise record.
