Midvale man, 74, dead in Big Cottonwood Canyon ATV crash

SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified a 74-year-old Midvale man who was killed when he lost control of his ATV in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal says Walter S. Engel was with two other friends on the Mineral Fork Trail about 10 a.m. Sunday when they headed back downhill.

Witnesses say Engel veered off the main trail and headed down a steep hill before losing control and rolling the ATV on top of himself.

Police say Engel wasn’t wearing a helmet and was dead when rescuers arrived.
