Mother suing LDS Church over drowning death of son

SALT LAKE CITY — A Colorado mother has filed a civil lawsuit against the Mormon church and a youth leader, claiming negligence in the drowning death of her son last year in Utah.

Seventeen-year-old Tory Jones died in September 2011 during a group outing at Quail Lake.

KUTV-TV reports the lawsuit alleges the group was boating and the teen, who was not wearing a life jacket, was dropped off in the water to swim to shore about 50 yards away.

The suit claims the youth leader left with two other boys to wakeboard and upon their return realized Jones hadn’t made it to shore. His body was found the next day in 22 feet of water.

The lawsuit seeks damages of at least $75,000 for pain and suffering and loss of companionship.
