SALT LAKE CITY -- This year marks the 100th anniversary of Buddhism in Utah, and a centennial celebration, titled "Walking the Path of Enlightenment," is planned for Sept. 15 in Salt Lake City.
Participants from the entire state will come together at the Salt Palace Convention Center, joined by special guests from Japan and throughout the U.S.
The afternoon will feature exhibits and workshops to promote Buddhist education and culture.
According to utahbuddhism.org, the first Japanese immigrants came to Utah in the late 19th century, and the first temple in 1912 was Jodo Shinshu. There are now many different Buddhist communities from Logan to St. George, including three Shin Buddhism temples in Utah -- in Ogden, Honeyville and Salt Lake City.
