WILLARD — Rescuers unsuccessfully attempted to reach a pair of hikers Saturday stranded on a vertical-face cliff near Willard Peak.
The hikers are each 40-year-old men from Salt Lake City, said Box Elder County Sheriff Lynn Yates.
One man was seriously injured, possibly with two broken legs, when rocks fell on him, said Yates.
One of the men called 911 about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to start the rescue effort.
At about 8:15 p.m. Saturday as darkness fell, rescuers attempted to land a medical helicopter near the cliff to retrieve the men, said Yates.
However the helicopter was unable to touch down because it was deemed too dangerous and the men were forced to spend the night on the side of a hill. Another rescue attempt was slated for early this morning, said Yates.
“They are stuck there,” he added.
Blankets, food and water were dropped from a helicopter to the hikers.
A helicopter will likely land this morning at Inspiration Point between Willard Peak and Ben Lomond Peak to pick up Box Elder and Weber County search and rescue members who will then be taken to the hikers, said Yates.
Agencies involved in the rescue include the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, Box Elder County Search and Rescue, two ambulances from Brigham City and the Willard Fire Department.
