SALT LAKE CITY -- A 32-year-old man convicted of killing a mother of three while burglarizing her Sandy home has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports 3rd District Judge Bruce Lubeck called Monday's decision in the case of Cody Alan Reece "an extreme sentence" for "an extreme crime."
In July, a jury found Reece guilty of aggravated murder and burglary, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
Reece was accused of shooting 33-year-old Magda Aleman during a vodka-fueled crime spree July 13, 2010.
Defense attorney Lisa Remal argued during the trial that Reece was sleep-deprived and under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs and methamphetamines that day -- and entered the home only after hearing a gunshot.
