WEST POINT -- A short high-speed chase that sometimes reached speeds in excess of 100 mph has resulted in a rollover crash here.
The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Monday at 4000 W. 300 North when a suspect in a robbery at the Syracuse Walmart rolled his vehicle several times after losing control while being chased by police.
Davis County Sheriff Todd Richardson said an off-duty Syracuse officer, who was at the store with his family, witnessed a man running from the store out of a door that was causing the store's alarm to go off.
Richardson said the man appeared to be taking an electronic appliance.
"The witness called it in, an officer recognized the license plate and gave chase," he said.
Richardson said when the suspect lost control, his vehicle rolled several times, ejecting the driver and partially ejecting a passenger.
He said the driver was in very critical condition and the passenger was in critical condition.
The driver was thrown about 50 feet.
The two men were transported to an area hospital.
Richardson said the Utah Highway Patrol was brought in to investigate the chase.
Syracuse will conduct an investigation into the theft.
