OGDEN — The city has decided on a location for its new fire station.
A new station to replace the current Station No. 3, at 340 S. Washington Blvd., will be built next year at 422 E. North St.
In June, the Ogden City Council authorized $400,000 in the fiscal year 2013 budget for property purchase for the future station.
Since that time, Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu has reviewed several available properties, taking into consideration service area, response time and safety. A total of three sites were reviewed.
Ultimately, the city negotiated the purchase of the property on North Street.
Mathieu said the new site provides for improved response times and the size of the lot should allow for an adequately sized fire station to operate a fire engine, paramedic unit and ambulance.
The new station would allow the fire department to lower operating costs by closing Station No. 6, which is in Business Depot Ogden.
Mathieu also said building a fire station at the location keeps the door open to partner with Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College for fire training.
The property was owned by Mountain Prime, LLC, and Kelly Nicholas Heitz, Inc.
The city purchased the 2.2 acre property for $205,000. The sale is scheduled to close on or before Monday.
Mathieu has told the city he would like to use the remaining budgeted funds to perform site improvements.
There will likely be demolition costs involved at the property, and the Harrisville canal runs east of this property and may have to be piped.
