Herbert tours S. Utah flood zone

SANTA CLARA — Gov. Gary Herbert is touring a flood zone in southern Utah where 61 homes were damaged last week.

Herbert started his tour at the broken dike that sent a torrent of water through Santa Clara.

He planned to spend an hour in the area until 4:30 p.m.

The dike disintegrated in heavy rains Sept. 11, sending a deluge of water from a retention pond into town.

The flood also damaged 16 businesses.

Officials plan to rebuild the earthen dike, which dated to 1919.
