At the Kaysville City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, we were pleased to hear that our mayor has decided to hold a public hearing regarding a raise in city electric rates.
This is a large increase, and all of us should take advantage of expressing our views at that hearing. The hearing will be held October 2, 2012 at 6 p.m. in the City Council room. Questions might be: 1) What is the purpose and target of the increased funds? 2) Why is the increase not a raise in property taxes instead of the electric fund? 3) How much income does the city expect to gain from this increase?
If this increase is necessary, raise our property taxes instead, so that we can deduct them at income tax time. The funds that we pay into the electric fund are not used solely for electricity. Large amounts are transferred into the general fund for other purposes, so a raise in property taxes would be much more appropriate.
Residents should come and voice their opinions at the public hearing.
