Arkansas’ John L. Smith to return after brother’s funeral in Idaho

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas football coach John L. Smith will return to Fayetteville on Friday evening after attending his brother’s funeral.

The school says Smith flew to Idaho Falls, Idaho, following practice Thursday evening. Bart Smith died Monday and the funeral was Friday afternoon.

Smith formerly coached Michigan State and Louisville, and briefly at Weber State. He was hired at Arkansas in April following the firing of Bobby Petrino.

He filed for bankruptcy two weeks ago, stemming from land deals gone bad in Kentucky. A filing this week revealed he had more than $25 million in debt.

The Razorbacks (1-2) host Rutgers (3-0) on Saturday.
