Some go to see the celebrities.
Others go to support the cause.
Now in its ninth year, the Mascot Bowl, hosted by Lehi High School Sports Marketing and EnergySolutions, is set for Monday night at 6 p.m. at Lehi's stadium.
The event is designed to raise money for the "Bear Hugs for Kids" and "Firemen and Friends for Kids" charities which were established to offer children in need the opportunity to shop for presents at Christmas time.
The local youth all-star team will play a team of mascots, including every college and pro team in the state and many other NBA and NFL creatures.
Celebrity coaches include Jerry Sloan, Frank Layden and Ron McBride, as well as Chris Wingert and Andy Williams from Real Salt Lake and Aaron Lesue from the Utah Blaze.
The events begins at 6 p.m. and ends with fireworks. The tickets cost $3.
Miller Motorsports Park invited Parnelli Jones to stop by earlier this week to will sign his photo on the Wall of Legends.
Jones, a driver in all classes as well as a longtime successful team owner, visited MMP's Legends Hall on Thursday to sign his photo.
He deserves a spot. Jones was rookie of the year in 1961 at the Indy 500, was the first guy to top 150 mph in qualifying in 1962, and won the big race in 1962. His team won the Indy 500 again in 1970 and 1971. Throughout the years, he won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb (1963), won the USAC Stock Car championship (1964), won the Mexican 1000 and Baja 500 and numerous other SCCA national titles. He is a member of
six motorsports halls of fame.
Five-time Olympian Kim Rhode will be at the Cabela's Lehi store today, signing autographs and sharing some of her experiences as a trap and skeet shooter.
Rhode will be at the store from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. She is the only American athlete to win medals in individual events in five straight Olympic Games, including gold in women's skeet at the 2012 games in London. She's also is a six-time national champion.
The Lehi store is located at 2502 Cabela's Blvd. in Lehi.
Officials get due
The Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation will induct 11 former referees into the Officials Hall of Honor in a Sept. 26 ceremony at the South Towne Exposition Center.
The group includes Bob Blair of Ogden and Dennis Whimpey of Morgan, as well as the late James Green and Lisa Rasmussen, both formerly of Ogden.
Other prep and college officials include Rick Blackwell of Circleville, Kirk Brown of West Valley City, Gerry Ewing of Salt Lake City, Frank Iacobazzi of Sandy, Cal Jones of Orem, Kent Myers of Cedar City, and Morris Swenson of Blanding.
