Penny payment leads to Vernal man’s arrest, conviction

VERNAL — A man who paid his $25 medical bill with pennies has been found guilty of disorderly conduct after authorities say he became belligerent in the doctor’s office.

Jason Robert West, 40, of Vernal, decided to protest his bill last year by dumping 2,500 pennies onto the receptionist’s desk.

Authorities say he then yelled at clinic staff and became verbally abusive, leading to the disorderly conduct arrest.

The receptionist says West frightened her when he first apologized, then reached into his bag to grab the jar of pennies before dumping them on her desk.

West denied acting aggressively but was convicted of the misdemeanor this week after a four-hour trial in Vernal City Justice Court.
