LOGAN -- The line between fairy tales and tragedies are sometimes very thin.
The Roy Royals faced such a circumstance Friday night at Logan High School. Leading 23-22 with under 2 minuets to go, the visting Royals watched in horror as Taylor Compton blocked and returned a punt 65 yards to seal a homecoming victory for the Grizzlies by the score of 30-23.
The game started with black and gold fireworks, as the Royals turned three Grizz turnovers into a 13-0 lead deep into the second quarter. Roy quarterback Tyler Skidmore connected with Conner McGuire for a 52-yard touchdown pass. Not to be out done, Garrett Bowman hooked up with David Hadley minutes later to give the Royals the 13-0 lead.
Logan quarterback Lucas Falk got his Grizzlies back in the game with two touchdown passes of his own for a slim 14-13 lead at halftime.
Roy came right out and took back the lead with Ben Aikuli drilling a 34-yard field goal.
Grizz, Falk found Hagen Andersen for a 29-yard touchdown, taking back a 22-16 lead.
Bowman answered back, hooking up with Braxton Patton with a 10-yard touchdown strike, setting up Compton's homecoming heroics.
Roy's quarterbacks combined for over 360 yards passing, and the Royals defense forced five Grizzlies turnovers, and held several times on fourth down to give thier offense chances to put the game away.
After starting 3-0, the Royals now find themselves 0-2 in Region 5 play.
* MOUNTAIN CREST 42, BONNEVILLE 0: At Washington Terrace, the Mustangs jumped to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, embarrassing the Lakers on their home field.
* EAST 47, CLEARFIELD 0: At Salt Lake City, the Leopards took no pity on the visiting Falcons, running up a 33-0 lead at the break before calling off the dogs.
Four different East players had rushing touchdowns in the game.
* WOODS CROSS 54 CYPRUS 7: At Magna, Skyler Farnes tossed four touchdown passes, three to Sean Gallagher and the Wildcats bounced back from their first loss of the season in dominating fashion.
* BOUNTIFUL 30, HIGHLAND 27 (OT): At Salt Lake City, the Braves overcame an eight-point deficit in regulation to force overtime and Jakob Hunt pumped in the game-winning touchdown to give Bountiful a thrilling victory over the Rams in a key Region 6 battle.
