Utah unemployment rate drops below 6%

SALT LAKE CITY — State officials say Utah’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.8 percent in August, still below the national rate of 8.1 percent.

Utah’s latest jobless report released Friday shows the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate crept down 0.2 percentage points from 6 percent in July.

August’s rate is also lower than the same month last year when Utah’s unemployment rate was 6.7 percent.

The state Department of Workforce Services says all industrial sectors added jobs in August, including construction.

Gov. Gary Herbert says the numbers show Utah is adding jobs while growth in other states is stalled.

Herbert says the state is a model of “wise economic stewardship and fiscal prudence.”
