HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Steady as she went, the Bonneville High golf team sailed through the Region 5 boys golf season with a few simple goals.
Go undefeated in league tournaments.
Win region.
Have fun.
Mission accomplished for coach Mike Edwards’ Lakers squad.
On a brisk Monday morning, the Lakers scored a team total of 299 to top Roy with a 321 at Hill Air Force Base’s Hubbard Golf Course.
Logan scored 334, followed by Sky View (338), Mountain Crest (349) and Box Elder (351).
“It’s nice to have this depth, plus the senior leadership from Nick Smith,” Edwards said. “He was the rock all season. He battled hard for the medalist honors all year. We went as Nick went.”
In Monday’s round, the Lakers’ Hayden Gallegos recorded a 72, a stroke ahead of teammate Carson Park, three shots clear of Roy’s Ryder Velasquez.
Bonneville’s Nick Smith and Jadyn Wayment were fourth at 77, with Bonneville’s Luke Stimpson and Roy’s Trevor Kennedy at 79, with the trio of Bonneville’s Malosi Togisala and Kaige Schuler and Logan’s Justin Kim at 80.
The win gave the Lakers the undefeated mark through league matches.
Kim edged Smith for the season-long medalist honors, separated by just a few strokes.
Smith and Gallegos, both seniors, came up big, as did Park, a junior.
“I made a few ticky tack errors today, but had some good up and downs,” Smith said in describing his round. “We had a lot of good scores. We wanted region and we got it. Now we want to take a step further.”
The next step is the state 4-A championship on Oct. 3-4 at Logan Country Club.
“Guys came through them when we needed them all year,” Smith said. “Now we’ll take it one shot at a time, be strong as a team and count on each other.”
