LOGAN — The Lakers licked the icing off the proverbial cake on Thursday afternoon.
A year ago, the Lakers won the Region 5 girls tennis title and sent seven of their entries to state.
“Our biggest goal this year was to get everyone to the state tournament; and winning region is the icing on the cake,” Bonneville coach Katy Hall said.
Thursday at Utah State’s courts, the Lakers won title at No. 1 and No. 3 singles as well as No. 1 doubles.
The Lakers won the team chase as well, with Sky View second and a surging Box Elder third. Mountain Crest, Logan and Roy rounded out the finish order.
At No. 1 singles, Bonneville freshman Hannah Jones battled tooth-and-nail with Sky View’s Kaitlyn Slade, winning 7-6, 7-6(6) for the title.
At No. 2 singles, Box Elder’s Kate Hadfield won a tight match with Bonneville’s Hailey Daniels, 6-3, 7-6(2). At No. 3 singles, Bonneville’s Maren Conolly closed out her senior league season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sky View’s Kassidy Smith.
At No. 1 doubles, the Lakers’ Alexis McCall and Nanille Johnson topped Box Elder’s Sarah Isaac and Kylie Perkins, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Box Elder’s Caitlyn Glauser and Whitney Smith topped Sky View’s Nicole Cullimore and Rachel Wilkey for the title.
“Hannay had to work had against Kaitlyn,” Hall said. “The offseason matches these girls play is huge for the mental game.”
The top four entries at each divison advance to next week’s state 4-A tournament, set for Oct. 4 and 6 at Salt Lake’s Liberty Park.
“It’s going to be tough, but the girls in this region are up to the challenge,” Hall said.
