OGDEN — The Region 5 girls tennis championships followed form from the regular season, as the powerful Grantsville squad showed depth and power in Thursday’s finals rounds at Ogden High School’s courts.
The Cowboys met host Ogden in three of five championship matches on Thursday, with Grantsville coming away with all three titles.
Morgan’s No. 1 doubles team showed its perseverance with an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) win over Grantsville’s Ashlyn Peterson and Morgan Castagno for the title.
“Really, congratulations to Grantsville on a strong finish to close it out,” Ogden coach John Peterson said.
At No. 1 singles, Grantsville’s Tyler Orgill and Ogden’s Abbey Anjewierden continued their battles, with Orgill winning 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, the Cowboys’ Courtney James topped Ogden’s Annet Unda, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Grantsville’s Jennifer Christensen topped Stansbury’s Abby Nordgren, 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 2 doubles, Ogden’s Maile Madsen and Kylie Lund fell to Grantsville’s Madi Linares and Whitney Castagno, falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Bear River finished third in the team chase, with Morgan fourth. Stansbury edged Ben Lomond for fifth. The top five finishers in each division will advance to the state 3-A tournament, set for Oct. 5-6 at Salt Lake’s Liberty Park.
