St. George police arrest woman for false rape report on bike path

ST. GEORGE — St. George police say they’ve arrested a woman who apparently made up a story that she was raped on a bike path.

Authorities say 25-year-old Sarah Rutz was booked in the Washington County Jail Tuesday on suspicion of fraud and making a false report to police. Records show she has since posted bail.

Police say a woman called them May 2 reporting she was jogging on a bike path when she was attacked, knocked to the ground and raped.

Detectives say they worked tirelessly on the case before receiving a tip that the rape might have been fabricated. Police say Rutz eventually retracted her story.

Investigators say she also committed fraud by obtaining victim money from the Utah State Crime Victims Reparations.

Rutz did not return a message seeking comment.
