KAYSVILLE -- The St. Joseph Jayhawks didn't want to be in the position they were in Friday, but made the most of their opportunity to make the state 1-A baseball tournament with a solid 6-3 victory over the Intermountain Christain Lions at Davis High School.
"We knew coming in that we needed to hit the ball and put it in play in order to have a chance and we did just that," St. Joseph coach Steve Mendez said. "They made some mistakes fielding the ball and we were able to score some runs on those mistakes. The kids are having more fun this year and that has showed itself in our play, especially today."
The Jayhawks scored runs in three different innings with each run coming on either an error, a fielder's choice, or a passed ball. Pitcher Brendan Daley threw well through four innings, with Nick Gruet coming in to shut the door when Daley tired.
While the Jayhawks had just two hits -- from Daley and Nick Palmer -- they came in key situations. Ty Evans had a pair of RBIs.
St. Joseph will play Piute at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Spanish Fork High School.
