CARSON, Calif. -- For a player that wasn't expected to start, Alvaro Saborio turned in another stellar performance.
The Costa Rican international tallied his second career hat trick for Real Salt Lake, including a world class turning strike in the 65th minute to lead RSL to a 4-0 victory over CD Chivas USA on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center.
With its second consecutive Major League Soccer win -- and third across all competitions -- Salt Lake improves to 16-11-4 this season (52 points) and moved three points clear of Seattle and Los Angeles on the Western Conference table, although both teams have a match in-hand on the Claret-and-Cobalt.
Saborio made easy finishes in the opening 12 minutes of play, the first assisted by midfielder Javier Morales and striker Fabian Espindola, and the second again assisted by Espindola, to quickly make it 2-0 and put the home side on its heels.
Chivas fought back strongly later in the half, forcing RSL keeper to make a handful of tough saves.
After allowing the Goats a few opportunities early in the second half, Real's offense ignited, forcing Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to make multiple quality saves.
Saborio's third goal came after midfielder Will Johnson let loose a shot that bounced off Kennedy and back to Saborio's feet. Saborio corralled the ball, and then unleashed a line drive shot that smashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the goal.
Espindola earned a hat trick of his own, this time in the assist category, when he played the ball through to Paulo Jr in the 81st minute to slam the door on Chivas.
