Jayhawks doubles squads shine
A year ago, the St. Joseph girls tennis team savored a state 2-A/1-A championship.
While many of those girls graduated, the Jayhawks’ doubles teams earned a spot in the 2012 state tournament, which was staged on Saturday at SLC’s Liberty Park.
Rowland Hall dominated the team chase with four titles out of five divisions.
St. Joseph’s Kelsey Almony and Katie Panushka advanced to the state No. 1 doubles final with a semifinal victory over Rowland Hall’s team, winning 6-2, 6-4. In the final, Manti’s Amanda Naylor and Arie Naylor topped the Jayhawks, 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 2 doubles, St. Joseph’s Audra Thurston and Ali Koehler advanced to the semifinals before falling 7-5, 6-2 to a San Juan duo.
