SALT LAKE CITY -- The Davis High girls tennis team met many challenges this year, sweeping through Region 1 and tournament play with a fair amount of success.
The Darts capped their season on Saturday morning with a strong final day of play to finish second in the state 5-A championships at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.
With a repeat victory from Brianna Turley at No. 2 singles, the Darts ended up as runner-up to talented Lone Peak in the team chase.
Lone Peak tallied 26 points, with Davis next at 17 points. A year ago, Alta and Lone Peak shared the title, with Davis third.
The Darts had four head-to-head matchups with the Knights on Saturday, with "Breezy" Turley defeating Leah Heimuli, 6-2, 6-0, in the final.
Turley, a sophomore, lost just five games in four matches this week.
Davis teammate Jensen Emery advanced to th No. 3 singles final, falling to Lone Peak's Morgan Hall, 6-4, 6-3. Both are talented freshmen.
In perhaps the best match of the day, Davis' Kendall Sargent and Kira Sparks met Lone Peak's Megan Call and Electra Cochran for the No. 1 singles title. The teams split the first sets, with Lone Peak finally winning 6-0, 6-7(7-4), 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, Davis' Alyssa Sheehan and Liz Watkins meet Lone Peak's Haley Schettler and Lauren Allen in the semifinals, with the Darts duo falling, 6-0, 6-0.
The Darts -- coached by Mark Borski -- went into Saturday's action minus senior Alexis Turley, who saw her season end in the quarterfinals. The Darts' captain was not at 100 percent all season long.
In the 4-A championships, Bountiful turned up the heat in Saturday's action, winning the title by a big margin over Orem, East and Skyline. Bonneville finished eighth.
In the 3-A championships, also completed on Saturday at Liberty Park, Judge Memorial repeated as state team champion with Park City second.
At St. George, Panguitch rolled past Piute 15-5 on Saturday in six innings to cap a perfect 23-0 season. The Bobcats have won three of the last four state title.
