W. Valley man arrested in death of ex-girlfriend’s baby

WEST VALLEY CITY — A West Valley City man has been arrested in the death of his ex-girlfriend’s baby in May.

Police say 29-year-old Reed Wilcox was booked Friday into the Salt Lake County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. He was being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

According to charging documents, the baby’s mother left her 6-month-old son in Wilcox’s care on May 26, and police responded later that day to their home on a report that the infant was having breathing problems.

The boy died a few days later at a hospital, and doctors determined the cause of death was a brain injury that could have been caused by smothering.

According to court documents, Wilcox’s story of what happened changed several times during interviews with investigators.
