Federal contractors don't have to give veterans preference

Editor,

Regarding Oct. 7th letter, "Other vets' job programs are already in place," while it is true that currently preferences are given to military veterans, there is a movement by the Republican Party to replace federal workers with contractors. This would affect all civilians employed, whether it’s the defense department including Hill AFB, the U.S. Postal Service, and numerous other federal agencies. According to the current Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program: http://www.dol.gov/ofccp/regs/compliance/factsheets/vetrights.htm

Article 7:

"The Federal government usually grants a hiring preference to disabled veterans, and veterans who served in the Armed Forces during certain periods or in military campaigns, when hiring for government jobs. Private employers, including those who do business with the Federal government, do not have to provide a preference in hiring for veterans."

This being the case, veterans like myself, could soon be on the outside looking in when it comes to future federal employment. Is this really what you want for our men and women in uniform?
