Girls soccer: Darts, Knights advance to 5-A semifinals

KAYSVILLE — It won’t surprise many that Davis County plays a pretty fair soccer game.

With three of the four state 5-A semifinalists from the Davis School District — to go with two of the four in the 4-A semifinals — the Top of Utah soccer squads can toot their horns.

Region 1 champion Davis needed a stirring comeback to knock out Brighton 3-2 in Thursday’s quarterfinals at Angel Street Park Soccer Complex, and will now face Region 2 champion Viewmont in next Tuesday’s semifinals at Juan Diego High School.

Northridge added the Davis County flavor with an upset victory over Bingham by the 2-1 score.

The Knights will meet Alta in the other 5-A semifinal.

• DAVIS 3, BRIGHTON 2: At Kaysville, the Bengals led 2-0 early in the second half but the Darts rallied in dramatic fashion.

After teammates Sydney Vidal and Melanie Ostler scored earlier in the second half to tie the match up, Davis senior McKayla Carter dropped in a driving corner kick with just minutes to play in the Darts’ season for the game-winner.

The Davis-Viewmont match is set for 11 a.m.

• NORTHRIDGE 2, BINGHAM 1: At South Jordan, the Knights played their possession game to perfection, controlling the play and the scoreboard.

Adriana Arranbride scored in the 17th minute on an assist from Annabelle Schwab; then Tawnie Fitzgerald gave Northridge the 2-0 lead in the 50th minute, with Schwab delivering the assist again.

Though Bingham scored on PK in the 70th minute, Northridge’s defense, led by keeper Josie Manwill and Morgan Macrum, kept the Miners off the scoreboard.

Assistant coach Robert Taylor praised the Knights’ solid defense, as well as the star play of Schwab.

“She was all over the field, setting up teammates, leading the way,” Taylor said.

The Knights and Hawks play at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

• VIEWMONT 2, LONE PEAK 1: At Bountiful, the Vikings scored two in the second half to advance.

Courtney Wallis and Abbie Flandro scored for Viewmont.

• ALTA 4, FREMONT 1: At Sandy, the Silver Wolves came up short in their quest to join the semifinals.

Mariah Elmer scored for Fremont in the team’s season finale.
