WASHINGTON TERRACE -- If it was about intensity, this girls soccer match would still be going.
When the dust settled, Bonneville High's girls squad picked up a 3-0 victory over Clearfield in the state 4-A quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.
Emilie Tafunai scored a pair of goals and the Bonneville defense lived up to its reputation with a devastating effort to propel the Lakers to the semifinals.
"We knew they would be intense, and they were," Bonneville coach Rob McDaniel said of the Falcons. "Clearfield didn't back off, right to the end. They were excited to be in the quarterfinals and played well."
McDaniel's squad matched that intensity.
"They presented us with a new formation, and we had to adjust," he said. "I felt like we stayed within our game plan, didn't get rattled and possessed the ball."
Siena Thornock and Tafunai each tallied hustle play goals in the first half. Then, just as the second half began, Tafunai finished off a Lexie Stratford cross to set the Falcons farther back.
"It was good to get that goal," McDaniel said.
The Lakers' defense, balanced by seniors Sadie Sholly, Emilie Volk and Morgynn Hall, as well as juniors Maren McDaniel and Bree Tuck, helped keeper Megan Fillpot post another shutout.
"Another key was our midfield and forward linking up well. We've on their intensity all season, and it paid off today," McDanel said.
The Lakes and Wildcats will meet at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Juan Diego High School.
Bountiful and Skyline will meet at 6 p.m. in the other semifinal.
* WOODS CROSS 2, BOX ELDER 1 (OT): At Woods Cross, the Bees just wouldn't be shooed away, sending the game into overtime.
But an extra-period scored by Kyra Fawcett sent Woods Cross to a Tuesday battle with Bonneville, and Box Elder home.
Kacie Anderson scored the Wildcats' other goal.
Megan Sutton scored the Bees in their season final.
* BOUNTIFUL 3, TIMPVIEW 0: At Bountiful, Morgan Cook, Kennedy Merrick and Christina Plank each contributed a goal as the Braves dominated.
Charity Cole had the shutout as Bountiful will meet Skyline in the other 4-A semifinal.
