Reader illustrates the national debt

If people are confused concerning the mounting debt of our country, the following math should simplify it:

U.S. tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000; federal budget, $3,820,000,000,000; new debt, $1,650,000,000,000; national debt, $14,271,000,000,000.

Let's now remove eight zeroes and pretend it is a household budget:

Annual family income: $21,700; money the family spent, $38,200; new debt on the credit cards, $16,500; outstanding balances on the credit cards, $142,710. The total budget cut is $385.

It appears all of us as a nation will need to sacrifice in many ways to get this national debt under control.
