WSU history lecture to address Mormons and race

OGDEN — Religion and race are the topics of the next history lecture presented by Weber State University’s Alumni Association and the Weber Historical Society.

“Black, White, and Mormon: Race and the Mormon Struggle for Whiteness,” presented by Paul Reeve, starts at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, in the Lindquist Alumni Center. The center is on the south end of the Ogden campus, at 1235 E. 4100 South.

Reeve, a history professor, will discuss not only the 19th-century racial policies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also the reasons for and the results of outsiders labeling Mormons as “white slaves” and as facilitators of “racial contamination.”

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call 801-626-6709.
