WASHINGTON -- Officials at Zion National Park say an anonymous, $825,000 gift will help protect a critical piece of private land inside the park from being developed.
The 30-acre parcel at the base of the red rock Tabernacle Dome will be turned over to the National Park Service once the purchase is complete. The Salt Lake Tribune reports the owner is working with The Trust for Public Lands and the National Parks Conservation Association to finalize the deal.
The purchase ensures a house won't be built on the property.
Conservationists have been worried about potential development on nearly 3,400 privately owned acres inside the park. Their fears escalated when a mansion was recently built two miles north of the parcel near Tabernacle Dome.
