In the one-and-done world of high school soccer postseason play, teams know they are only as good as their last effort.
For six Top of Utah teams, their next moment in the spotlight comes today in the state 5-A and 4-A state tournament semifinals at Juan Diego High School.
Two more schools will jump into the action on Friday at Jordan High School.
The ultimate goal is the state finals, set for Friday and Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The marquee matchup in today's 4-A semifinals pits Bonneville, the defending state champion, against Woods Cross out of Region 6.
Lakers coach Rob McDaniel said his team played a high-intensity game on Thursday, a 3-0 win over Clearfield, and communicated well.
"It's something we have been working on from the first practice," he said. "It was a good thing to see."
Bountiful the Region 6 champion, takes on Region 7 Skyline in the 6 p.m. semifinal.
The 5-A semifinals pit a pair of longtime rivals in Davis and Viewmont at 11 a.m. For many season, the two schools battled each season for the Region 1 title until the Vikings moved to Region 2.
Now they meet for a berth in Friday's final.
In the other 5-A semifinal, upstart Northridge takes on Region 3 champion Alta at 1:15 p.m.
The Knights finished third in Region 1, but Northridge pulled off a couple of state tourney wins a season ago, and are playing with extreme confidence.
The State 3-A and 2-A semifinals are set for early Friday at Jordan High School. Defending 3-A champion Ogden takes on Park City in the high-gloss matchup at 1:15 p.m. Wasatch and Snow Canyon play in the early semifinal at 11 a.m.
In the 2-A semifinals, St. Joseph wraps up the day's action against Manti at 6 p.m. The Jayhawks topped the Templars in last year's semis.
Waterford and Maeser meet at 3:45 p.m.
St. Joseph coach Alex Salvo, a veteran of many state tournaments, summer it all up: "It's win or go home."
