Stranded BASE jumper rescued from cliff near Moab

MOAB -- A 21-year-old Australian BASE jumper is safely down after getting stuck on a cliff near Moab and dangling 250 feet above ground.

Grand County Sheriff's officials say Mathew Pittard was attempting a 350- or 400-foot jump Wednesday in the Mill Creek area when a cross wind blew and pushed him into the rocks.

Authorities say Pittard's friends called 911 about 4 p.m. They later helped by rappelling down to him and lowering him to rescue crews waiting below.

Pittard was flown to Moab Regional Hospital about 7 p.m. Sheriffs' officials say he had some cuts and fractured his foot in the ordeal.

The rescue comes two weeks after another BASE jumper was rescued from a Utah cliff. That happened in Provo Canyon.
