SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Two men face charges for allegedly sparking the destructive Dump Fire over the summer in Saratoga Springs.
Court records show 37-year-old Kenneth Nielsen of Washington, Utah, and 42-year-old Jeffrey Conant of Woodinville, Wash. are charged with misdemeanor reckless burning and using prohibited targets.
Investigators say the men were shooting June 21 when they hit an explosive target that sparked fire in some weeds.
Detectives say they found packaging for the explosive target and identified Nielsen's fingerprint on it.
Officials say the fire burned more than 5,500 acres and cost $2.1 million to put out. About 2,500 people were forced to evacuate.
The fire is also blamed for leaving a barren hillside that led to major erosion and flooding in September.
Nielsen and Conant didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
