Girl critically injured after being buried in sand dies

ST. GEORGE — A 15-year-old Santa Clara girl citically injured after becoming accidentally buried in sand at Snow Canyon State Park in Southern Utah has died.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies say the girl and her younger siblings dug a hole about four feet deep in the sand and were playing in it Friday.

The family was getting ready to leave when they noticed the girl wasn’t with them.

They returned to find the girl fully submerged in the sand with only her hair sticking out of the ground.

Deputies say the hole may have collapsed in on her at some point, and she wasn’t breathing and had no pulse when she was found.

The girl was flown to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City. A spokesman for the hospital confirmed she died Saturday night.

Her name wasn’t released.
