OGDEN — Chicano rapper Cuete Yeska is quickly recovering from his injuries sustained during a drive-by shooting in Ogden.
During a phone interview, Yeska said from his California home that he plans to be on the road again for his next concert in Idaho in November.
The shooting occurred Oct. 13, after the Redondo Beach, Calif., rapper parked his tour bus in the parking lot of the Maverik convenience store at 3186 Washington Blvd., according to Ogden police.
The rapper, who preferred to be identified by his stage name, said he was on his way to perform at a concert in Seattle, but regularly made stops along the way to sell CDs and other merchandise.
“We were just there selling, when this dude rolled up and had words with someone on the bus, and he just came back blasting,” Yeska said. “I really didn’t see anything until I got hit.”
Police said a suspect in a primer-gray or black 1990 GMC Blazer attacked the bus, leaving Yeska injured. Police believe the attack may be gang-related.
Yeska received treatment at the hospital and was released after a few days. He has returned home to spend time with his family.
“It’s not cool being shot,” Yeska said, “but I took it in a good spot where I was able to function.”
The rapper said he finds it ironic that someone tried to kill him, considering that he recently branched out into acting, writing and starring in a biographical movie titled “When I Die.”
He said he was a little surprised to experience the confrontation in Ogden.
“I’m from L.A.,” the rapper said. “You’d assume that that is where it would happen.”
Ogden Police Lt. Scott Conley said his officers continue to work leads, expecting to bring an arrest or prosecution shortly.
