Alice Evans of Ogden celebrated her 80th birthday with a family dinner on Thursday.
The second of three children, she was born Alice Jane Gowans on Oct. 29, 1932, to Floyd and Rachel Gowans, in Erie, Pa. She grew up in Erie and graduated from Academy High School in 1950.
She came to Utah to attend Brigham Young University and later transferred to the University of Utah, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1955. On June 7, 1955, she married Jack Evans in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Salt Lake Temple. He died in February.
Her seven children and their spouses are Carrie and Scott Nelson, Julie and Kurt Boyer, Patti Pilgrim, Amy and Brian Smith, D’Ann Fletcher, John and Holly Evans, and Laurel and Brad Robb. She has 27 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
After raising her family, she worked at McKay-Dee Hospital and later as a clinical instructor for the Davis Applied Technology College’s nursing program. She enjoyed teaching her students. She retired in 2005.
She enjoys quilting, shopping, lunch with her friends, going to the club, and having her children and grandchildren near her. She can usually be found at Weber State University football or basketball home games and occasionally on the road cheering the team.
