Thumbs up: To Ogden city, ranked as America’s No. 2 ski town by Powder Magazine. The ranking is based on several variables, including location, cost and terrain.
Thumbs down: To Utah, for lagging behind in preparing for the impact of climate change. According to a report from the Utah Rivers Council, there is real future peril for our state’s water supply and other natural resources. Thumbs up: To the state’s new online website for checking out health insurers. healthrates.utah.gov has links that allow looks at consumer reviews and will later compare the quality of the insurers. Thumbs down: To pocket 911 dialing, which is a real health risk because 911 operators must track down bogus calls. To avoid this, take 911 off a speed dial or at least don’t make it the first speed dial option. Thumbs up: To Utah’s Amber Alert system, which is now faster than it was. A new technology company has updated alerts and provides them faster to the public, Thumbs down: To French President Francois Hollande, who wants to ban homework as part of his new education initiative. That strikes us as very counter-productive and despite the cheers it may get from students, under no circumstances should that homework-free option be allowed to gain traction in the U.S., which already lags globally in education.
